In the Bleak Mid-Ulster

In the bleak Mid-Ulster long ago,
Well, a year or so,
I hedged my bets and opened up
Enough to let go.
And it was fine and free
In the times that did follow
But time can change how you feel,
Sometimes the sweetest things
Are the hardest to swallow
The bleak Mid-Ulster passes by,
There's nothing left here for me now
I wonder what was ever.
But now and then I see
A sign or a tree
That takes me back to when we
Were saying things we wanted to believe.
Sometimes the sweetest sounds
Ring so hollow.
Don't get me wrong -
It's not that I yearn for your touch,
Or any such thing,
At least,
Not much...
But in the bleak Mid-Ulster,
It feels so long ago,
You said you loved me,
Did you mean it it?
I don't know.

Going Home

I've got a long way to go
Through Mid-Ulster in the snow
The tailbacks of red on white
But the heartland is blue tonight
People carrying heavy loads
Out on these icy roads
Who can you trust
When even the ground is treacherous?
I don't know, I don't know
I just know I'm going home
What do you stand for
When you've been left out in the cold?
When you've been betrayed by
All the lies that you'd been sold?
I don't know, I don't know
I just know we're going home
It's been this way as long as we've known
Before we carved up land and set it in stone
Open your eyes
to this sea of white
bouncing off the winter sky.
These are your guiding lights
In uncertain times
The signal on my radio
It comes and goes
Leaving me alone with
Cars, static and snow
